Chapter Twenty-One

Mikey sat on a chair next to the couch where Trick sat next to Mason. Hamlish took notes in a chair across from Mikey. They were nearing the end of their second family session and, after listening to Mason and his revelations, Mikey swiped a tear from her eye. “I can’t believe you blame yourself for what happened to me,” said Mikey. “It’s my own damn fault that I got caught up with Victor. Not yours.”

“I should have seen the signs,” said Mason, his face pale. “I knew Margaret was involved with him, but I didn’t do anything about it, and then you visited, and you were trying to mend fences with Margaret. I should have warned you.”

“You did warn me, and I ignored you. I did everything to prove I could take care of myself, and I didn’t need you,” said Mikey. “I was the idiot.” She shook her head. “When are you going to get it through your thick skull that I’m responsible for my mistakes. I made the choices I made. You didn’t hurt me; Victor did. You saved me.”

Mason dropped his head. “I don’t see it that way.”

“Take some credit, Mikey,” said Trick. “You saved yourself, with Mason’s help.” Trick glanced at Mason. “But she’s right. You can’t take on the world’s problems, Red. Those burdens get too heavy to carry, and then you need a pill to cope.”

“I let you down, too,” said Mason.

“We’ve already talked about that,” said Trick. “I don’t carry a single grudge or regret, and neither should you. God knows I’ve made my share of mistakes and let you down.” He shifted to face Mason. “The point is, everybody wishes they could do things differently. You’re not alone in that. You just need to ease off the gas in the guilt department. You didn’t kill your mom and you’re not responsible for Victor’s evil. And if you don’t find a way to deal with that, you’ll always be looking for an escape.” He paused. “And if Miss Vain were here, you know she’d tell you the same thing. She’s seen the real Red and she still sticks with you. That should tell you something.”

Doubtful, Mason rubbed his neck. “I think it’s going to take some time.”

“Which is why we’re here,” said Hamlish. “To finally take the time.” He set his notepad on a side table. “We have a couple more minutes. Is there anything else you’d like to say to Mason?”

Mikey dabbed at her eyes with a tissue. “Just that I’m so glad we’re talking about this. You’ve always avoided the subject.”

Mason cleared his throat. “I was ashamed.”

Mikey scoffed. “Well, stop it. If I’d known what you’d been carrying, I’d have sat you down a long time ago and set you straight. I don’t blame you for anything and never did. And I certainly never blamed you for Victor or what happened to Mom. I love you, you big oaf. I need you to get that through your thick head.”

Mason smiled softly.
